community choir faq

Find clear answers to common questions about our community choirs

Do I have to be ABLE TO SING?

Nope! To join our Community Choir you just have to LIKE singing! No judgement. Promise.

Do I have to audition for your choirs?

There are no auditions for our Community Choirs. If you would like to sing a bit to find out what section you should be in, then you can – but we don’t ask you to.

do the choirs do performances

Yes, definitely. We love to show off the hard work that people have put in. These may vary from term to term – or not always be at the end of a term. We like to keep them varied where possible. However, if you’d rather not perform, that’s also OK!

do I need to be able to read music

No. However, we do give out sheet music rather than just lyrics. We’ll help make sure you can follow it through – but it’s just about getting the idea of shapes in the music, rather than being able to name notes etc. And you can still learn everything just by listening if you’d rather!

can I attend either rehearsal?

Yes! Monday Evenings and Tuesday Mornings are run in the same way, and roughly the same pattern, so members can swap and change between the two whenever they like. No need to say in advance – just turn up.

are there learning tracks to help?

Yes – all the parts are recorded separately, which members all have access to online. Then you can listen along to your own part in your own time.

Find clear answers to common questions about our chamber choir

Do I have to audition for the choir?

Yes. Our Chamber Choir is entry by audition only. Auditions are to see the quality of your voice, and the speed at which you pick up music. No one needs to be perfect, or sight-read flawlessly – you will just need to show that you can learn quickly.

do the choirs do performances

Yes, definitely. We love to show off the hard work that people have put in. These may vary from term to term – or not always be at the end of a term. We like to keep them varied where possible. Members are expected to take part in concerts.

do I need to be able to read music

Yes. You will need to have a fair standard of music reading, and be able to sight-read to an extent. No learning tracks will be made, so members need to do their own rehearsing at home.

can I miss a rehearsal?

With such a small group, it is important for members to commit to rehearsals. However, obviously life happens, and members can of course miss rehearsals where needed.

why singsmiths?

Smiths always seem to create things – like blacksmiths. So with Singsmiths, we’re creating things with singing.

why is there no apostrophe?

We ummed and ahhed about this a lot. But as the name of the group is (eg) Singsmiths Community Choir – that’s the full name, rather than the choir belonging to Singsmith. At least know that we thought long and hard about it.

can we have a singsmiths choir at our school?

Singsmiths choirs are available for any school within a reasonable distance of Orpinton/Bromley that would like to have one. Currently we have availability on Mondays and Wednesdays.
